Capito, Carper, Cramer, Kelly Introduce Legislation to Reauthorize the Economic Development Administration

U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, along with other senators, introduced bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the Economic Development Administration (EDA) for the first time in nearly 20 years. The bill, known as the Economic Development Reauthorization Act of 2024, aims to modernize EDA's core programs and activities such as workforce development and disaster assistance.

Ranking Member Capito emphasized the importance of reauthorizing the EDA, stating, “The Economic Development Administration is a critical partner for many of our communities, helping to drive investment, create jobs, and grow local economies across West Virginia.” She expressed excitement about partnering with other senators to introduce the legislation that will ensure continued funding for infrastructure projects and other activities.

Chairman Carper highlighted the role of the EDA in driving job growth and investing in local economies, stating, “Reauthorizing the EDA will give this critical agency the tools and resources it needs to better support local businesses and organizations and equip our communities with climate-resilient infrastructure.” He expressed gratitude for bipartisan support in empowering the EDA for the future.

Subcommittee Ranking Member Cramer emphasized the need for modernizing the EDA's mission and funding levels, stating, “This bill provides critical updates to the agency’s programs and initiatives and will better support EDA’s mission to facilitate locally-driven economic growth.” He highlighted the focus on hard infrastructure and workforce development, particularly benefiting small rural communities.

Subcommittee Chairman Kelly emphasized the bipartisan nature of the bill and its impact on various communities, stating, “Our bipartisan bill will help communities in every corner of the country thrive.” He highlighted the input received from stakeholders in crafting the legislation to address future challenges and opportunities.

The Economic Development Reauthorization Act of 2024 aims to support economic development opportunities in rural and tribal communities, onshoring critical manufacturing supply chains, and authorizing regional commissions. The bipartisan effort reflects a commitment to strengthening local economies and job creation across the nation.
